Silver Divorces

Recently, a growing trend has been divorces in couples who have been together for long periods of time (20+ years) and are older in age. The popular term for these types of divorces has become “Silver Divorces”.

There are a lot of reasons for people to get divorced after many years of marriage. For some, once the couple’s children are adults themselves, they realize that they no longer want to be together, or they no longer feel that they have to stick it out for the kids. Others realize that they are no longer happy with their marriage, or feel the emotional connection that they once did. Sometimes, it takes years for one party to gain the courage admit that they simply are not happy anymore. Another theory is that people are living longer lives, and realize that what suited them in their 20s no longer works for them in their 50s, 60s, and beyond.

Regardless of the reasons, divorces for people aged 50 and over are on the rise. In some ways, it can make the divorce process simpler: child support and custody agreements are no longer necessary, and older children are likely able to comprehend the reasons. In other ways, it can make the divorce process more difficult: it’s difficult to start over again later on in life, social security must be considered, and there are likely more financial assets involved.

Divorce is difficult at any age, so make sure that you get the legal, emotional, and mental support that is appropriate for you.
